A wildfire amplified by drought may rip through a town in a matter of hours, or rising seas may take years to destroy a neighborhood. Health impacts may show up in months, or take the form of devastating cancer rates that rise over a decade. Regardless of speed or intensity, the climate emergency will impact us all.  It’s not common to read about the Pueblo Revolt in an article that reaches a worldwide influence. This article from the New York Times highlights the Pueblo Revolt, voices from our Pueblo relatives and orgs like PAA and The Red Nation southwest. This article includes Pueblo stories that shed light on the Pueblo Revolt and the realities of what we face today.

The Pueblo Revolt was one of the most successful revolt of Indigenous Peoples against European oppressors. This history deserves continuation as we continue to face the violent threats of colonialism. The Pueblo Revolt Never Ended. As descendants of the revolution, this spirit is in all of us. In solidarity we can continue working for a future that is Indigenous.

“The Mystery of Chaco Canyon” Virtual Film Screening & Panel Discussion

Film screening of “The Mystery of Chaco Canyon” on 9.22.20. The event opened with a panel discussion from Governor Brian Vallo of the Pueblo of Acoma and Julia Bernal, Environmental Justice Director of the Pueblo Action Alliance to discuss their ongoing work to protect the Greater Chaco Landscape. As the panel discussion closes, a link was provided to watch the film on the website of film's producers, Bullfrog Productions.

"The film, narrated by Robert Redford and written and directed by artist and archaeoastronomer Anna Sofaer, examines the deep enigmas presented by the massive prehistoric structures found in Chaco Culture National Historical Park in northwestern New Mexico. While the Indigenous Pueblo people left no written text to help us to understand their culture, their thoughts are preserved in the language of their architecture, roads and light markings. Pueblo descendants of Indigenous Pueblo people from the Greater Chaco region regard the Chaco cultural landscape as a sacred place and speak of the significance of Chaco to the Pueblo world today.

Today, the Greater Chaco Landscape is threatened by oil and gas development, risking both sacred cultural resources and the health of communities in the area. Tune in to learn more about the Greater Chaco Landscape and what you can do to help protect it."

Indigenous Community Defense

This workshop, presented by Julia and Marcus from Pueblo Action Alliance, will initiate the conversation on what it means to organize under the basis of Community Defense. What the COVID19 pandemic has taught us is that we lack readiness and preparedness when it comes to responding to crisis but what we have seen in various indigenous communities, is a structure that organizes around principles to protect our communities. In this workshop, PAA will share their definition of Community Defense and the demands to reach long term and eventually revolution. Pueblo people have been able to retain a sense of unity when it comes to protecting our lands, water, people, plants and animals. We will share other examples of what indigenous community defense looks like across our earth mother and invite our audience to reflect on how we are able to organize our communities through Community Defense. Thank you to everyone at Uplift!

Native America Calling

It’s a matter of when, not if. Many tribes are heavily invested in the fossil fuels industry. So much of the American economy depends on fossil fuels it’s hard to imagine life without them. But some organizations are doing just that. They say the time is now to start thinking about moving away from the energy and economy systems based on extracting minerals from the Earth.
